DISCIPLINE HINTS FOR THE SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSROOM
- Know the needs and characteristics of pupils and learn to work with them, not against them.
- Generally, a child is what he feels you think he/she is. Therefore, expect him/her to be good, and then compliment them at every opportunity.
- When you run into a problem, ask yourself:
- Could it be because I need to improve my teaching?
- Do I understand the needs of this particular child?
- Vary activities and challenge the children.
- Reinforce the good behavior, and try to take care of the objectionable behavior as inconspicuously as possible.
- Try not to provoke the child's sense of justice. BE CONSISTENT!
- Try not to frustrate the child by expecting more than he/she can do.
- Children need AND like rules.
- Have the students help to formulate the rules (no more than 3 to 4).
- Have a few concise and positively stated rules and be willing to give the reasons for each if necessary.
- Try to prevent problems rather than deal with them after they occur.
