DISCIPLINE HINTS FOR THE SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSROOM

  1. Know the needs and characteristics of pupils and learn to work with them, not against them.
  2. Generally, a child is what he feels you think he/she is. Therefore, expect him/her to be good, and then compliment them at every opportunity.
  3. When you run into a problem, ask yourself:
    1. Could it be because I need to improve my teaching?
    2. Do I understand the needs of this particular child?
  4. Vary activities and challenge the children.
  5. Reinforce the good behavior, and try to take care of the objectionable behavior as inconspicuously as possible.
  6. Try not to provoke the child's sense of justice. BE CONSISTENT!
  7. Try not to frustrate the child by expecting more than he/she can do.
  8. Children need AND like rules.
  9. Have the students help to formulate the rules (no more than 3 to 4).
  10. Have a few concise and positively stated rules and be willing to give the reasons for each if necessary.
  11. Try to prevent problems rather than deal with them after they occur.
